The elk does not like nickel anymore

In the last few weeks, industrial metals have known only one direction, and that is the downwards one. The 3 months future price for nickel is presently at USD 22,300.00/mt, yet it is only a few months ago that prices were trading on average around USD 26,500.00/mt. Even if economic risks have slightly risen again, at least according to the sentiments of the media, it would seem that positive reports, such as an increase in Chinese industrial production of 13.3% over the previous year, still tend to be ignored at the moment.

The respect of high office forbids any extensive criticism being made of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany.  This is usually the reaction when anyone, no matter who, sizes up the achievements of this office holder in public. After the somewhat surprising departure of the last president, Mr. Köhler, who had otherwise appeared quite competent, the political clout in Berlin wanted his successor to be from within their own ranks.

Compared to the lows of recently, nickel prices could make good ground over the last few days on the London markets. After the uprisings in the Middle East and the earthquake catastrophe in Japan, the market had made considerable corrections. Even though rates could not quite return to the previous levels, they were able to trade once more around the USD 27,500.00/mt level.

Whilst the month of February gave us average prices for 3 months nickel of around USD 28,300.00/mt, with rates of, at times, over USD 29,000.00/mt, the picture has changed quite considerably since. In our last publication towards the end of February we wrote “Without taking into account the black swan effect (the “appearance” of black swans, not only in the financial world, is supposed to herald unexpected events), the potential for nickel prices is still to be more on the higher side.” Unfortunately this effect did take place.
